Plot summary
Nick Charles has never followed his father into medicine, and the gap between them is still open when he and Nora arrive in Sycamore Springs for his birthday. Dr. Bertram Charles, retired, is disappointed that his son chose detective work, so Nora urges Nick to find a crime to solve. Rumors spread that Nick is in town on a case, unsettling Edgar Draque, who tells his wife Helena they must leave once they have a particular painting by the local artist Peter Berton. Nora buys that painting from Willie Crump's store as a birthday gift, thinking its windmill means something to Nick. That night Berton arrives at the Charles' door, ready to confess something, and is shot.
