John Wood
Biography
John Wood was an English actor whose stage work was defined by Shakespeare and the plays of Tom Stoppard. Born in England in 1930, he studied law at Oxford and served as president of its dramatic society before joining the Old Vic in 1954. He made his Broadway debut as Guildenstern in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, earning a Tony nomination, and won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play in 1976 for Stoppard's Travesties; another nomination followed for Sherlock Holmes. With the Royal Shakespeare Company, his Brutus in Julius Caesar marked a breakthrough, and his King Lear won an Evening Standard award. On screen he appeared in WarGames (1983), Ladyhawke (1985), Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986), Shadowlands (1993), Richard III (1995), Sabrina (1995), and Chocolat (2000).
