Plot summary
Work at a tomb in Jerusalem turns up a skeleton whose wrist and ankle bones carry the coloration of crucifixion. A gold coin marked with the name of Pontius Pilate, a jar from 32 AD, faint thorn marks on the skull, unbroken leg bones and the trace of a carpenter's trade all fit the years in which Jesus died, and the authorities begin to ask whether the remains are his. The Vatican assigns Father Matt Gutierrez, a Jesuit priest, to examine the case and defend the faith, placing his belief against Dr. Sharon Golban's scientific reading of the evidence. Politicians, clerics and extremists on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian divide take the find as a struggle over the site and over what the discovery means.
