Plot summary
In 1977, Chris and Marion are married and raising a child in Eastwood, a London suburb at the end of the Metropolitan line known as Metro-land. Their routine is broken when Toni, a childhood friend who has spent years traveling as a bohemian poet, telephones and returns to England. The two had once planned to leave the suburbs behind for an avant-garde life in Paris. Chris, now a London banker who set aside his photography, takes long walks at night and lists in his head the things he should be grateful for. Toni tells him he has settled for a steady job, a house and a middle-class routine. Chris thinks back to Paris in the late 1960s, to Annick, the girlfriend he had there, and to Marion, the English visitor who told him he would end up married.

- Executive producer Andrew Bendel and director Philip Saville needed three punk-era songs for live band scenes by a fictitious group called The Subverts. Danny de Matos and Del Bartle wrote "Amerikkka We Hate You", "Destroy the Hoi Polloi" and "You Destiny", which did not make the Polygram soundtrack.
