Plot summary
Jane Eyre's childhood has been bleak, and she is a plain, impoverished young woman. She goes out into the world to work, and through Mrs. Fairfax, Mr. Rochester hires her as a governess at Thornfield Hall for Adèle. Jane settles happily into her position at the house. Its master, Edward Rochester, is an abrupt man, troubled by family matters, past injustices and secrets. Despite her mild, unprepossessing manner, Jane has strong hidden passions; she expresses her own opinions and shows resolve in times of trouble. She and her employer develop a mutual affinity, and Jane falls in love with him.

- Franco Zeffirelli shot Thornfield Hall at Haddon Hall in Bakewell, Derbyshire; since his use of it, later Jane Eyre adaptations have used the same house, and it is now synonymous with Thornfield. Haddon Hall had previously stood in as the castle in The Princess Bride.
