A first
In the early 1970s, Cody became widely known as the "Crying Indian" in "Keep America Beautiful" public service announcements. The environmental commercial, which first aired on Earth Day in 1971, showed him in costume shedding a tear after trash tossed from a car window landed at his feet.
Beyond film
Cody's chanting can be heard on "Lakota," a song by Joni Mitchell that appeared on her 1988 album, Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm.
