Chief Thundercloud
Biography
Victor Daniels was an American actor who specialized in Western character parts and worked under the stage name Chief Thundercloud. Before he tried acting in Hollywood, he held jobs as a cowboy on cattle ranches, a miner, a rodeo performer and a tour guide. His earliest film work was as a stuntman, and he then became a character actor. He was the first actor to portray Tonto, the Native American companion of the Lone Ranger, in the Republic serials The Lone Ranger (1938) and The Lone Ranger Rides Again (1939). He also had the title role in Geronimo (1939). Throughout the 1940s he continued his Chief Thundercloud persona, usually as an antagonist opposing a white protagonist, including Akuna in Young Buffalo Bill (1940) and Chief Whitecloud in Renegade Girl (1946). Some appearances, such as Gun Smoke (1936), were uncredited, and he later worked in television on The Gene Autry Show (1950) and Death Valley Days. He died in 1955.
