Plot summary
By 1876, Robert Parrish commands a company under Colonel George Armstrong Custer. He had risen to colonel in the Union Army at a young age, and Kathy Howell, his fiancée and his general's daughter, has ended their engagement over his stalled career. Parrish makes enemies among civilians when he chastises them for violating Sioux lands and threatens to break heads. The Army reassigns him to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, where he is appalled by how the Indians are treated. He refuses the Indian agent's order to shoot escaping charges and is court-martialed. He then calls on his old commanding general, now President Ulysses S. Grant, and urges him to go to the frontier and meet Sitting Bull before war breaks out.
