Plot summary
In 1890s San Francisco, the firemen George Bell and Tom Watson pull the gold prospector Nugget Joe McDermott from the water as he tries to drown himself. Rosette, Joe's girlfriend, no longer loves him, and he wants to die. A telegram the next morning says that she loves him still. They collect a gold reward and take it to a bank, where they learn the police wrongly think they killed Joe for his gold. They find Joe aboard his boat, headed for the Yukon, and try to talk him into facing the police, but the ship leaves with all three aboard.
