Plot summary
In 1885 Arizona, Shefford signs on with a pack train, hoping to locate Surprise Valley, a gold-filled gorge where a group of travelers was trapped fifteen years earlier while fleeing the outlaw Dyer. The train's destination is a settlement controlled by Dyer, who keeps a group of women there. Shefford meets a young woman who will not tell him who she is. He describes the valley to her and says he wants to find and help the people still trapped inside it. Fearing for the man and woman who raised her, Jane Withersteen and Jim Lassiter, she asks him to leave the area.
