Plot summary
Pop Clark, who raises horses, leads other ranchers to the village of Chief Matapotan to accuse the people there of stealing part of his herd. The animals were taken by Barlow and his gang, who intend to sell them to the U.S. Army. Little Coyote, the chief's son, denies that his tribesmen are responsible, and only Steve Mason, Clark's foreman, believes him. After the ranchers ride away, a party of braves brings in a wild black stallion named Nakoma. Little Coyote offers to break the horse, but Nakoma escapes, and the village forbids him to return until he recaptures it. Barlow's men keep rustling horses from the Clark range.
