Plot summary
Governor Johnson and Commissioner of Internal Affairs Emerson want Calamity Jane for a job. Gun traders are selling weapons to an Indian tribe around Buffalo Flats, so they pull her out of a sheriff's jail and dangle a pardon, her record cleared, in exchange for her services. Her part is to travel to Port Deerfield, meet the government agent Jim Hunter, present herself as his wife, and come into the territory with a settler's wagon train. Peter "Painless" Potter, a traveling dentist on his way out of town after one of his usual blunders, gives her the husband her cover requires, and she brings him along on the trek. The smugglers join that same train, carrying dynamite and keeping watch for the federal agent they believe is riding with it.
