A role that slipped away
Gil Bellows was cast as Tommy in The Shawshank Redemption after Brad Pitt withdrew from the role due to a scheduling conflict, and casting director Deborah Aquino chose Bellows, then 27, following a long cross-country search.
Early training
Bellows studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles, then moved to New York after graduating and considered returning to Vancouver six months later after many rejections.
Behind the award
As an executive producer, Bellows put out the HBO biographical drama Temple Grandin, directed by Mick Jackson. That work brought him a Peabody Award and a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Made for Television Movie.
