Plot summary
The Udvaros Dance Ensemble, run by the married couple Gyula and Mari Udvaros, performs Hungarian and Slovenian folk dances in Budapest, the Slovenian repertoire drawn from Gyula's family background. Money is short, so the company rehearses and performs single engagements rather than full productions. After twenty years away, the ensemble's founder reappears: Gyula's older brother István, who left Communist Hungary and settled in Toronto. The family had no word of him, and their father still carries anger over the defection. Mari was István's girlfriend when he left. Gyula and Mari also learn he now goes by Steve Court and runs Steve Court Enterprises, the promotions company they had written to in hopes it would manage the ensemble. Steve does not explain why he has come back now.
