Plot summary
Three years after a moon mining expedition returns, its commander, William Phillips, is confined in a heavily guarded asylum. In San Francisco, the ground gives way under archaeologist Lloyd Walker's excavation, and Oliver, who supervises a homeless shelter, finds the birds gone from the local park because of a weird noise underground. Bella and her brother-in-law Nick are looking for her missing husband. Marianne, an entomologist who funds her studies by exterminating pests, is invited to work at City Hall, and salesman Spence cannot get his unemployment check. Liz Quinlan, an aide to the mayor, tells Walker to meet the ombudsman in Room 86. Journalist Jake Roth says his partner vanished after going there. Walker arrives to find Marianne, Oliver, Spence, Bella and Nick waiting with identical cards.
