Plot summary
Jill Adams, a former Army medic in recovery from addiction, takes drugs from the college research lab where she works as a security guard and sells them. She is raising Noah and Matilda. While she is driving, the car goes dead and another car hits it, sending it into a lake; Matilda drowns and a police officer revives her, saying that everything electric is failing. Coma patients have woken at the hospital, and at home nobody can sleep. Dr. Murphy, a psychiatrist, explains that people can no longer sleep and will soon show the effects of sleep deprivation, and that one elderly woman who still sleeps is under study at a military installation, The Hub. Matilda seemed to be asleep that morning, and Jill wants to take her there.
