Plot summary
Donaldson's is building a supermarket a few blocks from the Chicago home Doug Stauber shares with his wife Jen, and Doug, an assistant manager with the chain, has been told the manager's job there will be his. He is 33. The house he and Jen have started to buy is beyond his means unless the promotion comes through. Then Richard Wehlner moves to Chicago from Quebec with his wife and daughter and becomes assistant manager alongside Doug. Richard has a longer resume, wants the new store as well, and carries a past substance abuse problem he is trying to leave behind. Teenagers loiter in the parking lot, the customer survey cards Doug collects complain about them, and a sign posted in the deli window brings both men before the board of directors.
