Plot summary
Saul Benjamin practices psychoanalysis in New York and is married to Katie. Otto Jaffe, a colleague infatuated with Chloe Allen, asks Saul to take her on as a patient, and Saul is drawn to her at once. Chloe has become involved with Ted Caruso, a Broadway actor, and Saul's jealousy of anyone near her runs against the rules of his profession. The ghost of Sigmund Freud appears from time to time with warnings and counsel. Saul's attention wanders from his practice: he finds Mrs. Mondragon tedious and treats the paranoia of Marvin Zuckerman with a hat he makes by hand.

- Lovesick was one of two early-1980s films originally intended to star Peter Sellers, with production due to begin in early 1981 once he had finished Romance of the Pink Panther; his death in July 1980 meant his roles in Lovesick and 1984's Unfaithfully Yours both went to Dudley Moore.
- Peter Falk was announced to replace Sellers, and Diane Keaton, Ellen Burstyn and Mary Steenburgen were considered for the female lead before Beverly D'Angelo was cast; Falk then became dissatisfied with the screenplay and resigned while the film was in pre-production.
