Plot summary
Graham Marshall has worked for years at a large advertising company in New York City, and the promotion he counted on goes instead to Bob Benham, a younger colleague. The opening was created by the dismissal of George Brewster, a friend Graham sympathizes with. Leslie, Graham's wife, is devastated by the news. Waiting for his train that night, Graham is harassed by an aggressive panhandler, and in a rage he shoves the man onto the tracks, then leaves the station unobserved. The encounter exhilarates him, and he settles on a plan of revenge against those he holds responsible for his disappointments.

- According to Corsair Pictures executive Frank Perry, the screenplay originally ended with Michael Caine's character Graham Marshall being killed off, but it was rewritten because of Caine's performance. Director Jan Egleson shot three different endings, and the final one was not picked until post-production.
