Plot summary
It is Christmas 1942 in Point Muir, a small town on the California coast. Henry 'Hopper' Nash, seventeen, and his reckless friend Nicky have both enlisted in the U.S. Marines and are waiting to be summoned. Nicky dates Sally Kaiser, and the boys work at the bowling alley, setting pins. Henry spots Caddie Winger taking tickets at the movie theater. A younger boy helps him deliver flowers to her. He follows her home to a mansion on the hill and concludes she is a rich 'Gatsby girl', though her mother is the maid there. At the library she rebuffs his attempt to learn her name; at the soda shop she sets him up with one of her friends. At the skating rink he pretends to know how to skate and crashes, and Caddie agrees to a date.
