Plot summary

In Wichita, Kansas, Norma Carlisle volunteers to accompany Louise Brooks, a teenager invited to study dance at the Denishawn school in New York City. Norma's husband is wary, though their sons support her, and Louise's father insists that her stay depends on the chaperone. On the way east, Louise questions the rules while Norma keeps to them. Norma arrives hoping to learn about her own birth mother, and once in the city she walks Louise to class, meets Floyd, a Columbia student employed at the school, and asks him about a 15th Street address, which he warns her is dangerous. Denishawn's dancers are told to seem pure and untainted.
