Plot summary
Joan Castleman travels to Stockholm for the Nobel Prize ceremony, where her husband Joseph is to be honored, and their son David is along for the trip. David, who admires his father, keeps asking for a response to his first short story, while a biographer named Nathaniel Bone, hungry for scandal, works to get close to the family. Joan's unease grows as the attention around Joseph mounts, and his public tributes to her support deepen it. Years earlier, as a student at Smith College, Joan Archer had been drawn to her married professor Joseph, and had met a published alumna, Elaine Mozell, who spoke bleakly of what women writers could hope for.
