Plot summary

Michael MacCauley rides the Hudson Line into the city to sell life insurance, work he took up after leaving the police force. On this day his boss lays him off, and he keeps the news from his wife Karen and their son. Over a drink he confides in Alex Murphy, his former partner, who is still on the force. Heading home, Michael hears from a regular commuter, Walt, that a woman is watching him, and she sits down beside him. Her name is Joanna, and she makes an offer: $25,000 waits in a compartment, and $75,000 more is his if he finds a passenger traveling as Prynne at the last stop, Cold Spring. She hints that she knows about his time as a detective. Michael finds the $25,000.
