Plot summary
At an English manor house in 1932, Dolly Thatcham is preparing to marry Owen, a staid diplomat who will take her to a new life in Argentina, and her mother has arranged the day down to its details. The family and their guests arrive with the petty grievances that such gatherings bring out. Joseph Patten, Dolly's lover from the previous summer, is among them, and his presence throws her feelings into turmoil. Her mother watches with exasperation, determined that nothing should threaten the plans she has laid for her daughter's future. Dolly cannot settle whether to go with Joseph or to leave for Argentina with Owen.
