Biography

Clive Revill was a New Zealand actor and singer known for musical theater, the London stage and screen character parts. Born in Wellington, he first trained as an accountant before making his stage debut in 1950 and moving to London to study at the Old Vic Theatre School. He later joined the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Company. On Broadway he began with The Pickwick Papers in 1952 and later appeared in Irma La Douce and Oliver!, earning two Tony nominations. He was often cast as a comic eccentric in British films, among them Bunny Lake Is Missing (1965), Modesty Blaise (1966), The Assassination Bureau (1969), The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970), Avanti! (1972) and The Legend of Hell House (1973). He was nominated for a Golden Globe for Avanti! and voiced Emperor Palpatine in The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Later he did voice work in animation and video games, and The Queen of Spain (2016) was his last film.

  1. A change of course

    Revill first trained as an accountant in New Zealand, then changed course in 1950, playing Sebastian in Twelfth Night on stage. That same year he went to London to study acting at the Old Vic Theatre School.

  2. A role that slipped away

    Revill provided the voice of Emperor Palpatine in the original The Empire Strikes Back. Ian McDiarmid took his place for the 2004 DVD version, but Revill kept his credit, since his voice was very different from McDiarmid's.
