Plot summary
Charles Castle is a photographer. In 1912 he marries Anna-Marie in an Alpine church, and the next day she falls into a crevasse on a mountain walk. In the Great War he works as an army photographer in France alongside his assistant Roy. Afterward the two run a photographic studio in London, where Castle makes trick photographs. At a lecture at the Theosophical Society he watches Arthur Conan Doyle examine a projected image of the Cottingley Fairies; Castle gets up, says the image is a fake, and hands out his business cards. Beatrice Templeton then visits his studio with a photograph of her daughter, certain that a strange shape in it is a fairy. Castle cannot explain how the picture was made, so he travels to her village, Birkenwell, to see her.
