Plot summary
Two boys are flying a model plane at a disused military base in the English countryside when men in RAF uniforms accuse them of trespassing and lead them away. One of the boys is David, son of Maj. John Tarrant, a British intelligence officer. In London, Tarrant is working undercover against a gang selling weapons to terrorists, and he reports on the operation at the country house of Sir Edward Julyan, the head of MI6. A call from his wife interrupts him: David has been taken. The next call comes from a man calling himself Drabble, who knows Tarrant's work, has the boy, and demands £517,057 in uncut diamonds, handed over by Cedric Harper, Tarrant's superior.
