Biography

Julian Fellowes is an English actor, writer, producer and director who was born in Cairo in 1949 and started out on stage at the Royal Theatre, Northampton, later appearing in West End productions and at the National Theatre. He acted in films including The Scarlet Pimpernel (1982) and Sharpe's Rifles (1993), played the Prince Regent in Sharpe's Regiment (1996), and wrote romantic novels. He won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Gosford Park (2001), then made his directing debut with Separate Lies, which won the National Board of Review Award for Best Directorial Debut. He created, wrote and executive produced Downton Abbey, earning two Emmy Awards, wrote books for the musicals Mary Poppins and School of Rock, the latter bringing a Tony Award nomination, and created the HBO series The Gilded Age.

    Fellowes thought he had found his breakthrough when he was in the running to take over from Hervé Villechaize as the assistant on Fantasy Island, but Christopher Hewett was cast in the role instead.

    Fellowes trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where in July 1973 The Stage praised his performance as one of the Larrabee brothers in the end-of-term play Sabrina Fair.
