Plot summary
Maggie King works as a hairdresser aboard a liner in the Panama Canal Zone. Skid Johnson, a soldier finishing his last day of Army service, is persistent; she and her friend Ella reluctantly agree to a double date with him and Harry, who plays piano, in Balboa. At a nightclub, Maggie says she dislikes trumpet music, so Skid shows her what he can do with the instrument. A man speaking only Spanish approaches her at the bar and brawls with Skid; both land in jail, and Maggie misses her ship home. With her money gone on the fine, she moves in with the two men. She persuades Murphy, who runs Murphy's Cafe y Bar, to hire Skid as a trumpet player and herself as a showgirl, saying the two of them are married. Maggie and Skid fall in love.
