Plot summary
Merl Kramer works as a private secretary in the office of psychiatrist Dr. Redman. She is casually dating Karl Benson, who earns his living as a private investigator and once worked as a policeman. In conversation she brings up one of the doctor's patients, the struggling writer Alton Bennet, who keeps having nightmares about murdering his rich wife, Ruth, and she adds that Ruth owns valuable jewels. Merl also tells Benson that Ruth is due at the office that evening for a session about her husband. Ruth Bennet is found killed in the same manner her husband dreamed, and Detective Bill Dawson and insurance investigator Joe Cooper take charge of the case.
