Plot summary
In 1840s Madrid, Don Diego de la Vega is caught in a married woman's bedchamber and fights her husband Garcia and his brothers. His mute servant Paco brings a letter from Diego's father summoning him home, and months later the two reach Los Angeles, where Diego learns that his father has died and that his childhood friend Esteban, now captain of the guard, has become acting alcalde. Charlotte Taylor Wilson, a political activist from Boston, interrupts Esteban's first speech. At a masked ball celebrating his elevation, Diego receives a black cape, a hat and a sword that belonged to Zorro, with a letter revealing that his father wore them. Diego decides to announce Zorro's return at the ball, and a duel there ends with him leaping from a wall and injuring his foot.
