Plot summary
The Pilot is stranded in the Sahara Desert when his plane comes down there. The Little Prince, a boy who descended to Earth from Asteroid B-612, befriends him. In the days that follow, the Pilot hears the boy's history and of the journeys he made through the solar system. On the planetoids he visited, the boy met grown-ups with skewed or curious views of life, among them a King, a General, an Historian and a Business Man.

- Bob Fosse appears as The Snake for one song, "A Snake in the Grass", dancing a sequence he choreographed himself with trademark hip thrusts, jazz hands and hat-and-jacket props. It has been speculated as a major influence on Michael Jackson's costume and choreography for "Billie Jean".
- In 1973 Lerner and Loewe recorded the score at the Palm Springs Desert Museum, Lerner on vocals and Loewe at the piano. It included "Matters of Consequence", which was cut from the film, and is one of only a few existing recordings of the duo performing together.
- All of Saint-Exupéry's works had been banned in Nazi-occupied France, so the book appeared in his native homeland only posthumously, after the liberation of Paris.
- The music's creative team were dissatisfied with the film's Hollywood treatment, and Loewe refused to visit London to supervise the arrangement and recording of the score. The production was Lerner and Loewe's final musical together.
- Richard Burton was actively pursued for the role of The Pilot after his huge Broadway success with Lerner and Loewe's musical production Camelot, but he turned the part down.
