Plot summary
In East Berlin, a Stasi colonel briefs a visiting Russian general on a plan to place an agent inside the highest ranks of the CIA. The general warns that failure would be fatal, then approves it. In Washington, Dan Slater, the agency's assistant deputy director of plans and head of espionage, receives a cable telling him his teenage son Bobby has died in a skiing accident in the Austrian Alps. Slater doubts the official account and flies to St. Anton. There he finds Frank Wheatley, a former MI-5 agent and once his partner, who gave up intelligence work to run the international school Bobby attended and who argues against Slater's suspicions. Two Stasi operatives keep watch on the small resort town as Slater begins his own inquiries.
