Brandon Hurst
Biography
Brandon Hurst was an English stage and film actor. Born in London, he started performing in theater in the 1880s and appeared on Broadway from 1900, with his most notable stage role in Two Women in 1910. Hurst entered films late, making his debut at nearly fifty in Via Wireless (1915), and he went on to appear in 129 more films. He became known in the 1920s for villains and anti-heroes: in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920) he played Sir George Carew, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) cast him as Jehan Frollo, Love (1927) paired him with Greta Garbo as Alexei Karenin, and The Man Who Laughs (1928) featured him as Barkilphedro. His sound-era parts were often small, but he had a notable role as the sinister Merlin the Magician in A Connecticut Yankee (1931), and his final film was Two Guys from Texas (1948).
