Plot summary
The boys of the Welsh coal mining village of Glansarno go down the mine at twelve, and Miss Lilly Christabel Moffat arrives in 1895 to give them a school. The local Squire resists and obstructs her efforts, and she enlists Mr. Jones and Miss Ronberry as helpers, intending to convert a barn near the village into a schoolhouse. The opposition wears her down until she reads an essay by Morgan Evans, a young miner whose prospects hold little beyond hard labor and heavy drink. She begins teaching in her own house, to pupils of every age. Won over when she appeals to his vanity, the Squire consents to support Morgan's application to the University of Oxford, which requires a reference before it will consider him.

- Bette Davis played the schoolteacher Lily Cristobel Moffat in The Corn Is Green, a character written as a woman in her 50s. To look the part, the 36-year-old actress wore a gray wig and a padded "fat suit" that added 30 pounds (14 kg).
- Richard Waring was originally cast as the miner Morgan Evans in The Corn Is Green, but was drafted for World War II, so John Dall took over the part.
