Noble Johnson
Biography
Noble Johnson was an American actor and film producer who entered the film industry in 1909. Born in 1881 in Marshall, Missouri, he grew up in Colorado Springs and left school at fifteen. His impressive physique made him a busy character actor and bit player, and in silent films he took black, Native American, Arab, and Asian roles. In 1916 he founded the Lincoln Motion Picture Company in Omaha, serving as its president and star; it made race films for African-American audiences and was the first to show African-Americans as real people rather than caricatures. After resigning from Lincoln in 1920, he appeared in The Ten Commandments (1923), The Thief of Bagdad (1924), When a Man Loves (1927), The Mummy (1932), King Kong (1933), The Son of Kong (1933), and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) as Chief Red Shirt. He retired in 1950 and died in 1978.
