Plot summary
In Imperial Russia, Count Alexei Vronsky, an aide-de-camp to the Grand Duke, is traveling toward St. Petersburg when a blizzard forces him and a veiled woman to spend the night at an inn. He tries to win her over and she refuses him. At a reception held for Senator Karenin, Vronsky is introduced to the senator's wife, Anna, and recognizes her as the woman from the inn; he asks her forgiveness, which she finally gives. Anna is set on staying away from him, but life with an older husband leaves her restless, and she agrees to see him again. A closeness grows between them, and her bond with her young son, Sergei, thaws as it does. The aristocracy notices, to the senator's displeasure.

Love was released with two endings, and American exhibitors chose which one to screen: theaters on the coasts mostly picked Tolstoy's tragic version, while theaters in Middle America mostly picked the revised happy ending.- Producer Irving Thalberg was unhappy with Dimitri Buchowetzki's early footage on Love, scrapped it and started over, bringing in Edmund Goulding as director, William H. Daniels in place of cinematographer Merritt B. Gerstad, and John Gilbert replacing Ricardo Cortez opposite Greta Garbo.
