Clyde Cook
Biography
Clyde Cook was an Australian-American actor and comedian whose career spanned silent films, talkies and television. Born near Port Macquarie, Australia, he moved to Sydney as a child and was already an acrobat and dancer when he first took the stage in 1901. After touring Australia and London, including a run at the Folies Bergere, he made his screen debut in 1918 with His Only Chance. He then moved to the United States, appeared at the New York Hippodrome, and was signed by William Fox for comedy shorts. In 1925 Hal Roach hired him for short comedies, some directed by Stan Laurel, and Wandering Papas (1926) showed his acrobatic and facial comedy. Warner Bros. signed him in 1927, and he shifted to supporting roles, often playing cockney characters in the Bulldog Drummond and Mr. Moto films. He continued in small film and television parts into the 1950s, and his last film was Donovan's Reef (1963). He died in 1984.
