Plot summary
Paul Beaumont has spent years alone proving his theories on the origin of mankind, and Baron Regnard, his patron, lets him work in his mansion. Beaumont tells his wife Marie and the Baron that the theories are ready for the Academy of the Sciences, and leaves the arrangements to the Baron. Marie takes his key, opens the safe holding his papers, and hands them to the Baron. At the Academy the Baron presents the work as his own; when Beaumont protests, the Baron calls him an assistant and slaps him, to the laughter of the academicians. Beaumont becomes a clown called HE who gets slapped at a circus near Paris, where another performer, the rider Bezano, and he both fall for Consuelo, whose father, Count Mancini, means to marry her to the wealthy Baron.

- He Who Gets Slapped was the first film to feature a lion as the mascot for MGM. The logo, created by Howard Dietz, had first appeared on Goldwyn Pictures' Polly of the Circus before being passed on to MGM when Goldwyn merged with two other companies to form the studio.
- He Who Gets Slapped was the first film produced entirely by the newly formed Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, though it was not the studio's first release: it was held back until the Christmas season, when higher attendance was expected.
