David Torrence

Biography

David Torrence was a Scottish actor who was born in Edinburgh, one of eleven children and the elder brother of the character actor Ernest Torrence, and who was educated in England and Germany. He moved easily between the stage and the screen in the early years of the twentieth century, appearing in the silent films Tess of the D'Urbervilles (1913) and The Prisoner of Zenda (1913) before turning back to Broadway. After World War I he returned to Hollywood and remained there for close to twenty years, playing leads in silent pictures, often men of influence, as well as stern villains. His first sound film was the historical drama Disraeli (1929), and he supported George Arliss again in A Successful Calamity (1932) and Voltaire (1933). Later roles grew smaller, though comedy audiences knew him as the Scots attorney Mr. Miggs in Bonnie Scotland (1935). Stanley and Livingstone (1939) was among his last. He died in 1951.
