Gladys Brockwell
Biography
Gladys Brockwell was an American actress who came up through the stage before the silent era gave her a screen career. Born in Brooklyn, she was put on stage as a child by her mother, an actress, and by her teens was playing leading roles and running her own stock company. She adopted the name Brockwell and made her screen debut in 1913 with Lubin Studios, soon starring in a number of pictures. After moving to Hollywood she appeared in the 1922 version of Oliver Twist and in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923). Past thirty, she worked mainly in supporting parts and was held to be one of the era's best character actresses. Her first talkie, Lights of New York (1928), drew strong reviews and she was signed by Warner Bros. She died in 1929.
