Andy Richter
Biography
Andy Richter is an American actor, comedian and writer who also worked as a talk show announcer and sidekick. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and raised in Yorkville, Illinois, he studied film at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and at Columbia College Chicago before performing at Chicago's Improv Olympic and the Annoyance Theatre. In 1993 he joined Late Night with Conan O'Brien, stayed until 2000, then pursued film and television work. He starred in Fox's Andy Richter Controls the Universe and later in Quintuplets and Andy Barker P.I., and he returned as announcer and writer for The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien and Conan on TBS. He voiced Mort in the Madagascar franchise and has appeared in films including Elf (2003), Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006), Blades of Glory (2007), and Obsession (2026). Since June 2019 he has hosted The Three Questions with Andy Richter podcast.

Big break
Richter met SNL writer Robert Smigel at after-show parties, and two years later Smigel hired him to write for Late Night with Conan O'Brien. During a practice run-through, Smigel put Richter on stage with O'Brien and saw their strong rapport.
A role that slipped away
In the early 1990s, Joey Soloway staged The Real Live Brady Bunch at the Annoyance Theatre. Richter was not an original cast member, but when the Chicago actor playing "Mike Brady" chose not to move to New York, Richter asked Soloway for the part and got it.
Early training
After Richter left Columbia in 1988, he worked in Chicago as a production assistant on commercial shoots. He started classes at Chicago's Improv Olympic in 1989 and became a "House Performer" within a year.
A role that slipped away
Richter was a semifinalist in the Jeopardy! Million Dollar Celebrity Invitational, but performing with O'Brien made him drop out. Isaac Mizrahi took his place in the tournament.
Own stunts
In July 2009, Richter took the field as a first baseman for the American League in the Taco Bell All-Star Legends and Celebrity Softball Game. He represented the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and homered in that game.
