Plot summary
Chazz Michael Michaels, a sex addict who improvises his routines, and Jimmy MacElroy, a sheltered, germophobic skater, tie for men's singles gold at the 2002 World Winter Sport Games. An argument on the podium becomes a fight, and both men lose their medals and the right to compete for life. Years later, Chazz is fired from a children's ice show and Jimmy works in a sporting goods store. Jimmy's fan Hector spots a loophole: the ban covers men's singles, not pairs. Jimmy asks his old coach Goddard to help him reach the 2006 World Winter Sport Games, and at the ice show he runs into Chazz. Goddard watches news footage of their second brawl and proposes that they compete as the first male-male pair. Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg, a brother and sister skating pair, are among their rivals.

- The idea for the film was conceived by Busy Philipps, who fleshed out the screenplay, but co-writers Jeff and Craig Cox dropped her name from the script and she ultimately received just a story credit.
- Seth Rogen has said that he and his writing partner Evan Goldberg wrote a draft of the screenplay that included some of the biggest jokes in the finished film, but that the two of them were ultimately fired and did not receive any credit.
- The stadium in the outside shots is the Montreal Olympic Stadium, built for the 1976 Olympics, and the building used for the athletes' housing was the unique Habitat 67, built for Expo 67. The outdoor chase scenes were also shot on location in Montreal.
- Shooting was delayed for a small undetermined period of time when Jon Heder broke his ankle while doing a skating program for the film.
