Plot summary
A comedy writer and late-night host becomes the 26th recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in a ceremony filmed in Washington. The prize, named for the 19th-century humorist Mark Twain, honors people whose impact on American society resembles his; Richard Pryor was its first recipient in 1998. Organizers had first chosen Catherine O'Hara, who accepted and then backed out. Comedians gather to salute the recipient's work on the animated series The Simpsons and the sketch show Saturday Night Live, his three late-night programs, and his recent stint hosting the Academy Awards. Performers also work jokes about budget cuts and a change of management at the institution hosting the evening.
