Plot summary
Ray Wentworth was once the best romance card writer in a California where greeting card writers are as celebrated as movie stars. His divorce left him depressed and unable to write, and he lost his job. At the bar he frequents, Taft, a former colleague now at work on a novel, tells him that being single again may give him the chase he needs for inspiration. The state's governor then declares Girlfriend's Day, a new holiday with a contest for the finest card for it; only amateurs and jobless professionals may enter. Ray's ex-boss Stuyvesant brings him back quietly, hoping he can produce a winner. Hunting for material, Ray runs into Jill, who works in a card shop and thinks much as he does, and on a walk she kisses him.
