Plot summary
Jackie Moon's one-hit wonder, "Love Me Sexy", funds the Flint Tropics, the American Basketball Association club he runs as owner, promoter, coach and star player. The Tropics sit last in the league when commissioner Alan Ault tells the owners that four ABA teams will join the NBA and the rest will dissolve. Jackie argues the four best records should move, and enough owners agree. Ault adds a condition: every remaining home game must draw at least 2,000 fans. Jackie trades a washing machine for Ed Monix, a backup point guard. He also owes the unemployed hippie Dukes $10,000 for a half-court shot Dukes made, which Jackie covered with a fake check. Clarence "Coffee" Brown, the Tropics' best player, is a showman who does not value teamwork.

- The bear in the film was a five-year-old, 700 lb male grizzly named Rocky, wrestled on screen by a stuntman doubling for Will Ferrell; on April 22, 2008, seven weeks after wide release, Rocky fatally bit an animal trainer during another wrestling video, and although the death was ruled accidental his contact with humans was restricted.
- A prescreening at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas two weeks before the box office debut featured an appearance by Will Ferrell and director Kent Alterman, and to get into the theater all viewers had to wear a basketball uniform similar to the one Ferrell wears in the film.
- A number shown in the teaser trailer, 1-800-TROPICS, played a recorded message of Jackie Moon talking about season ticket packages for the 1976 season when it was called.
- Semi-Pro was the last film to come from New Line Cinema before the studio was absorbed by Warner Bros. Pictures, and so the final release to carry that banner.
- Several advertisements for Anheuser-Busch were filmed featuring Will Ferrell in character as Jackie Moon, and they were aired during Super Bowl XLII.
