Albert Brooks
Biography
Albert Brooks was born in Beverly Hills into a show business family and entered comedy as a young man, becoming a regular on late-1960s and early-1970s variety and talk shows. After two stand-up albums and short films for Saturday Night Live, he made his first mainstream film appearance in Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (1976). He then wrote, directed and starred in the satire Real Life (1979) and followed it with comedies about self-absorbed men, including Modern Romance (1981), Lost in America (1985) and Defending Your Life (1991). His supporting role in Broadcast News (1987) earned an Academy Award nomination, and his turn as a gangster in Drive (2011) was widely praised. He has also appeared in Private Benjamin (1980), Out of Sight (1998) and My First Mister (2001), and voiced Marlin in Finding Nemo (2003) and Finding Dory (2016). On television he was a recurring guest voice on The Simpsons, including The Simpsons Movie (2007).

About the name
By 19, Brooks had adopted Albert Brooks as his professional name. He joked that the real Albert Einstein changed his own name to sound more intelligent.
Early training
Brooks went to Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, where Michael McKean and David L. Lander were among his classmates, but he left after a single year to concentrate on comedy.
First role
Brooks made his first mainstream film appearance in Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, and Scorsese let him improvise much of his dialogue.
Behind the camera
Brooks made his directorial debut with Real Life in 1979, a film he wrote with Harry Shearer and Monica Johnson. In it he plays a version of himself filming a suburban family, and it has been viewed as foretelling reality television.
A first
Brooks's first short film, The Famous Comedians School, aired in 1972 on PBS's The Great American Dream Machine and was an early mockumentary.
Behind the award
After being passed over for an Academy Award nomination for Drive, Brooks tweeted, "And to the Academy: 'You don't like me. You really don't like me'."
