Plot summary
Jack Foley robs banks until a tip from Buddy's sister lands both men in Lompoc Penitentiary. There Foley rescues Richard Ripley, a wealthy Detroit white-collar criminal, from the boxer Maurice Miller, and Ripley promises him work and mentions uncut diamonds hidden at his house. On release Foley is offered only a security guard's post, and a botched bank robbery across the street sends him to Glades Correctional Institution in Florida. He learns that a fellow inmate, Chino, is digging out, and calls his ex-wife Adele so Buddy and the petty thief Glenn can help. Karen Sisco, a U.S. Marshal, is at the prison the night of the escape and spots the men. Foley, wearing a guard's uniform, gets the better of her, and the fugitives take her car, with Foley forcing her into the trunk as Buddy drives.

- Michael Keaton's cameo as detective Ray Nicolette, the role he had played in Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown, only happened because Tarantino insisted Miramax not charge Universal for a character it owned; Miramax received no compensation.
- Sandra Bullock was originally considered to play federal marshal Karen Sisco opposite George Clooney, but Steven Soderbergh decided their tested chemistry was "for the wrong movie" and not Elmore Leonard energy.
- Elmore Leonard's source novel grew out of a photograph he saw in the Detroit News of a beautiful young female federal marshal outside a Miami courthouse, a shotgun resting on her hip.
