Biography
Ellen DeGeneres is an American comedian and television host who also works as an actress, writer, and producer. She broke into show business through stand-up, performing at clubs and coffee houses before an appearance in 1986 on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson brought her national attention. She starred in the sitcoms Ellen (1994 to 1998) and The Ellen Show (2001 to 2002), then hosted The Ellen DeGeneres Show (2003 to 2022), which won her 33 Daytime Emmy Awards. Her film credits include Mr. Wrong (1996), EDtv (1999), and The Love Letter (1999), and she provided the voice of Dory in Finding Nemo (2003), a role she reprised for Finding Dory (2016), winning a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her stand-up specials include Here and Now (2003) and Relatable (2018), and she has hosted the Academy Awards and the Grammy Awards. Honors include the Mark Twain Prize, 20 People's Choice Awards, and in 2016 the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

First role
In 1989, DeGeneres landed her first regular TV role, playing Margo Van Meter on the Fox sitcom Open House, a short-lived spin-off of Duet. Her character worked as a receptionist for the Juan Verde Real Estate company.
