- Brooks wanted a famous 1950s actress for the title role and offered it to Doris Day and to former first lady Nancy Reagan. Day turned it down; Reagan loved the script and considered a first acting role in more than 40 years, but stayed home to care for her husband Ronald Reagan, who had Alzheimer's disease.
- Brooks then asked his good friend Carrie Fisher if she could send the script to her mother, Debbie Reynolds, who accepted the part; Reynolds had not had a starring role since the early 1970s.
